I slept in a no-frills cabin originally designed for Russian oceanography researchers and ate with my fellow tourgoers in a cafeteria-like dining space. Set out on an Oceanwide Expeditions Antarctica cruise and experience the outermost edge of human exploration. Sharing the wonder and elation of an Antarctic expedition with loved ones is probably one of the most emotive experiences imaginable. After fuel, crewing costs represent the next highest operating cost at around 30%. Crew numbers can easily total more than 80 people, including a number of costly experts, naturalists, and knowledgeable expedition leaders, all of whom need to be paid and also accommodated on board. With ship capacities of fewer than 200 guests, this makes the crew to passenger ratios—and the split of their wages—much higher than on traditional cruises.

Emma put a notice in the daily journal for people who were interested in celebrating Chanukah to let her know. She somehow found a battery-operated menorah and the pastry chef made us donuts (a traditional fried food for the holiday) each night. The ship isn't super fancy, but it was much nicer than I expected! The dining hall/meals are wonderful, there is space to be alone when you want to be or hang out with a group of new friends. I can't recommend this destination, itinerary, company (yours and G Adventures), the ship, the crew highly enough!!! Flights are the largest expense in addition to your Antarctica cruise cost.
At Sea, crossing the Drake Passage Southbound
Note that not all ships offer an early booking incentive, and these offers always have strict deadlines. The rewards for booking in advance aren’t just limited to cost savings though. Booking early also ensures you have a greater chance of securing your preferred ship, cabin, and itinerary rather than sifting through limited options at the last minute. This is especially true for those seeking the rarer single, triple or quadruple cabins available. Ice-strengthened ships are very expensive to build and maintain, and then there’s the actual fuel to run the ship which surprisingly represents as much as 50% of total operating costs in some cases. In 2011 new fuel oil standards came into force banning the burning of heavy fuel oil and requiring ships to use lighter, cleaner fuels such as Marine Gas Oil while in the Antarctic Treaty Area (the sea south of 60° South latitude).

The vessel you pick will have a bearing on the cost of your Antarctic cruise. A luxury Antarctic ship will provide a first-class experience of the White Continent, but will also come with an increased price tag. Many luxury vessels will feature gourmet menus, spacious cabins with their own balconies, and even their own saunas. There are a lot of significant variables which influence the cost to go to Antarctica, and no two ship operators are the same. The size of the ship, standard of accommodation, and quality of food and service all play a part in Antarctica trip costs. But there are less obvious factors too; the calibre of the expeditionary staff, what clothing is provided, whether the wine is included, staff to passenger ratio and the variety of complimentary activities.

Antarctica is the ice-packed secrets of the Ross or Weddell Seas.
Antarctica is the only continent with no significant plant life and no native land mammals, reptiles, or amphibians. Even in the extreme environment of Antarctica, life not only survives but thrives. Its icy seas, isolated icebergs and snow-driven deserts are home to wildlife that surprise and charm all who visit them. Although kayaking opportunities are possible in most locations during each excursion in the Antarctic region, weather, sea and ice conditions will dictate the when and where to ensure your safety and improve your experience. On the morning of the final day of our voyage, we will arrive back at the pier of Ushuaia, Argentina. Trees, grass and a busy city may seem strange to you after the white wilderness of Antarctica!
Which year to travel?
I booked a shared Veranda suite aboard Quark’s 176-passenger World Explorer. The 12-day voyage cost $7,598, including one night pre-cruise accommodation in Ushuaia. I didn’t have to buy waterproof pants and gloves, which are mandatory for the Zodiac trips. Some ships offer a willing-to-share program to help solo travelers keep costs down. If you are willing to share with a same-sex roommate, then you will be paired with another traveler to avoid paying a single supplement. Other ships might offer dedicated single cabins at a reduced rate.
What is the time zone in Antarctica?
Newly designed, next-generation ships are taking technology and luxury to a whole new level. There are Antarctica trips and ships to fit every budget and style. In addition to the cruise price, there are additional expenses travelers should account for to calculate the full Antarctica travel cost. These include the cost of flights, pre- or post-cruise hotel overnights, added optional adventure activities and gear. Compromise on comfort.Although there is not always an appreciative price difference between 3-star and 5-star ships (yes, really!), there are still savings to be made here.

Located at the back of the vessel, the high-tech room has sliding walls behind the spot where lecturers will stand that can open to reveal the surrounding scenery through floor-to-ceiling glass. Other unusual features include a full-blown science center with state-of-the-art gadgets and underwater drones for passenger use. Refurbished as part of the Norwegian Edge program in 2018, Norwegian Star shines with upgrades. The extensive enhancements include upgrades to staterooms, public spaces, restaurants, bars and lounges.
Antarctica is best visited in the summer months from November to March when the weather is warmer and the sea ice has melted enough to get closer to the island shore. This means you'll still have plenty of free time to do your own thing (and use the ship's excellent amenities) but also have the comfort of knowing expert leaders are handling the pesky logistics. There were many attempts to set foot at the South Pole in the early 20th century, so much so that it was dubbed the 'Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration', with many trying and failing until a Norwegian explorer by the name of Roald Amundsen reached in 1911. Exploration didn't stop there though with a total of 17 major expeditions launched in the following years from 10 different countries, the last one being Ernest Shackleton's last ill-fated voyage in 1917. Get closer to the action with, not one, but two daily excursions on land and, via Zodiacs, at sea. Typically, cruisers begin their adventure in Buenos Aires, although some lines use Puerto Williams, Chile, as homeport or have passengers fly into Santiago.
Rugged mountains, glistening sheets of ice and unique wildlife add to the mystique of this remote destination. Despite its seemingly unforgiving, yet hauntingly beautiful landscape, legions of tuxedoed-looking penguins waddle across the rocky terrain while giant elephant seals lounge on its shores. When you cruise to Antarctica, you get to take in breathtaking views and infinite beauty from the comfort of your balcony or the top-deck. Set your eyes on whale-abundant waters and catch a glimpse of penguin colonies as you sail past and feel free to experience all the wonder that surrounds you. Join Oceanwide on an Antarctic expedition cruise, and experience exploration in its native environment.
Often, I had my morning post-breakfast expresso in the observatory lounge and my diet coke in the 5th floor lounge. I tasted alcohol-based concoctions that were new to me and had great wine with dinner and sometimes lunch. All beverages were included except for a few brands of very premium alcohol. Snacks and beverages were available throughout the day and evening. The M/S Plancius is a very nice clean ship with comfortable beds. I was impressed that they cleaned the windows many times during the voyage so that you always had a clear view from inside.
There's never been a better time to travel to Antarctica -- at least when it comes to getting there in comfort and style. Antarctica is home to some unique sub-species that you will only find in this region of the world. Sail past glaciers where you can spot leopard seals that will greet you with indistinguishable grins. Witness the largest animal to ever exist, the blue whale -- species in Antarctica have been measured to be as big as three school buses!
