Its minimalist style and linear design elements connect with the grid of Los Angeles streets which can be seen from the windows. Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955. The tornado damage began Friday afternoon near Lincoln, Nebraska. An industrial building in Lancaster County was hit, causing it to collapse with 70 people inside. Several were trapped, but everyone was evacuated, and the three injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said. The house looks beautiful but from the reviews that I have read, the gardens are truly what people love.

The Eames House

Hugh Heffner no longer owns the property, but there’s still no public access inside the building, so don’t expect to see too much besides the exterior if you decide to drop by. On open park days, you don’t have to pay to park or to enter the grounds, but you’ll want to check in advance since they are closed for special events. Candidates across these races are running on some of the biggest issues facing the country — from abortion to the war in Gaza to election integrity.

Officials closed the airport to aircraft operations to access damage but then reopened the facility, Omaha Airport Authority Chief Strategy Officer Steve McCoy said. Dhaval Naik, who said he works with the man whose house was demolished, said three people, including a child, were in the basement when the tornado hit. Built in 1960 at 7776 Torreyson Drive in West Hollywood (in the hills overlooking Studio City and just off Mulholland Drive), The Chemosphere was designed by architect John Lautner.

An infant was among those killed, Hughes County Emergency Management Director Mike Dockrey told Oklahoma television station KOCO. Thursday's local elections have been pencilled in as a day of peril for Rishi Sunak for so long, it's hard to remember when Tory turbulence - and maybe even a leadership challenge - was not expected after 2 May. In one area of Elkhorn, dozens of newly built, large homes were damaged. At least six were destroyed, including one that was leveled, while others had the top half ripped off.

Bringing Hawaii style to cuisine

From the early Twentieth Century through today, the world's most famous and influential architects have created amazing buildings, homes and structures in LA and Southern California. These are just a few of the most beautiful - and unusual places you can see on your personal architecture tour. The Hollyhock House is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and 20th-century architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed the home. It’s a beautiful home that the city of Los Angeles owns, and it’s available for self-guided tours throughout the week. Not only is the beautiful craftsman style Gamble house an amazing place to visit for architecture fans, but movie fans will appreciate it too.

He was the one who decided on their profession, sending them off to MIT and then demanding they move out to Pasadena once they graduated. No word on whether he determined their style as well, but no matter who the progenitor, this graceful house originally built for one of the heirs of the Proctor & Gamble fortune remains one of the best examples of their work. However you decide to experience it, don’t miss the remarkable zig-zag staircase, a joyous element that adds a bit of fun to the perfection of the house.

He also designed one of my favorite places in LA, the Wayfarers Chapel. The Derby House was built for businessman James Derby, though due to a separation with his wife he would never live here. The textile blocks are supposed to help keep the interior bright. From the photos that I have seen online the inside looks really interesting. While you might not fully recognize the Stahl house at first blush, it’ll probably strike you as familiar. That’s because the Stahl house is a fixture in many commercials with its rooftop pool, bar, and lounging area that overlooks the city of Los Angeles.

Immortalized in a 1925 Charlie Chan novel, House Without A Key is known for its signature mai tai, a classic to be enjoyed any time of the day.

We think it's one of the greatest outdoor spaces in Southern California, with the architecture eclipsing the collection it houses. Architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed it to in the style of ancient Egypt. In the early 1990s, it was expanded in what renovation architect Norman Pfeiffer called "Modernist/Beaux Arts style." This place will forever bring back memories of our first time in Hawaii. The staff was extremely pleasant, the atmosphere was nice and calm with live, relaxing acoustic music.

Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house. Self-guided walking tours of the exterior of Heritage Square Museum homes are currently available. I came here during the 2019 Museum of the Arroyo Day and really enjoyed it. The homes are a museum dedicated to the settlement and development of Southern California in its first 100 years. There are special events throughout the year that you can attend including Christmas movie screenings with Street Food Cinema in December. I have not been able to confirm if the grounds are still open to the public during COVID 19.

Republicans currently hold a majority in the Senate, and Democrats are hoping to flip at least three seats to make it 25-25, giving them the majority via a tie-breaking vote from Democratic Lieutenant Gov. Austin Davis. The primary results in this pivotal swing state are certain to reveal insights about the major issues shaping the general election, namely on abortion and the Israel-Hamas war. Daniel Fienhold, manager of the Pink Poodle Steakhouse in Crescent, Iowa, said he was outside watching the weather with his daughter and restaurant employees. He said "it looked like a pretty big tornado was forming" northeast of town. Two people who were injured when the tornado passed through Lancaster County were being treated at the trauma center at Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln, the facility said in a news release. It said the patients were in triage and no details were released on their condition. Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Katrina Sperl said damage is just now being reported. Taylor Wilson, a spokesperson for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, said they hadn't seen any injuries yet.

Thanks for joining us for what has been a very significant day in Scottish politics - as we run up to local elections taking place across the UK on Thursday. The tornado warning was issued in the Omaha area on Friday afternoon just as children were due to be released from school. Many schools had students shelter in place until the storm passed. Omaha police Lt. Neal Bonacci said many homes were destroyed or severely damaged. Damaged houses are seen after a tornado passed through the area near Omaha, Neb., on Friday.

I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free. Docents were placed throughout the home to offer insight but it was nice to get to walk around on our own. The biggest bummer is that you cannot take photography indoors.

If you’re a horror movie fan, you must drive by the Nightmare on Elm Street house. It’s located in Los Angeles, and the iconic view you get from the street makes it well worth the trip. It’s currently closed to the public and no tours are available. While it's a far-flung possibility, which party has a majority in Pennsylvania's congressional delegation also could have major implications on the presidential race. If the 2024 White House election is contested or tied, each state’s congressional delegation will have a single vote in deciding the winner.

The exact link between tornadoes and climate change is hard to draw. Here's why

It sits just across the street from the Disney Hall and designed to both contrast with the Disney Hall's perforated metal exterior and respect its presence. The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. In 1926 it was moved to its current location and became a private residence. I drove past the house on my way to an event and immediately turned around in order to check it out. You cannot go beyond the gate but it is truly spectacular to see. When the home was finished in 1929, it cost a reported $3M, making it the most expensive private home in the city at the time. The Avila Adobe gets its notoriety from the fact that it’s the longest-standing home in Los Angeles. It’s one of the smaller homes though, so you don’t need to carve too much time out of your schedule for the tour. But because of its historical significance and because it provides a look back at the architectural style from 1818, we think it’s well worth the visit.

The Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills feels like the perfect home to kick off this list with. Visiting the grounds of this beautiful mansion is a favorite of both locals and tourists. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion.

Robinson’s department store when they started living in this mansion. The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926. You used to be able to tour the house but now the new owners only make it available to the public during special events. The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Llyod Wright for Aline Barnsdall though she quickly became disillusioned with the home and donated it to the city of LA. The hollyhock was Aline’s favorite flower and was used as a theme throughout the house.

Even if you cannot tour the home it is visible from the park and the city views are wonderful as well. Master woodworker Sam Maloof and his carpenters designed and built this lovely, thoughtful home piece by piece in his on-site workshop; no two door openings are the same here, and each joint is a wonder of craftsmanship. A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, Maloof has had his iconic rocking chairs shown at the Smithsonian; he also designed the chairs that were used on-camera at the history-changing Nixon/Kennedy debates. Visitors can see some of this furniture, as well as the wide-ranging collection of arts-and-craft pieces that he and his wife of 50 years, Alfreda, amassed together. The garden, which he tended, and the house are both open for tours; if you ask, you might be able to peek into the workshop, where he continued building until his death in 2009 at the age of 93.

Though visitors only see about half of the original house, it’s well-preserved with an interesting mix of Spanish, Mission and ranchero influences. Where would we be without those energetic civic boosters that built Los Angeles? Its exterior is made almost entirely from river rock and the interior is heavily influenced by Pueblo Indian dwellings. Fans of today’s DIY movement will appreciate the rustic Craftsman charm of this home, which is furnished with hand-crafted wood pieces; it’s interesting to see how closely modern-day bohemian design mirrors that of Lummis House.

Earl’s features extraordinary cocktails by the sea along with a reimagined menu emphasizing locally produced products, fresh island fish selections, and freshly baked flat breads. One of the most iconic restaurants in Waikiki, House Without A Key is Halekulani’s popular indoor/outdoor gathering spot for sunset cocktails, appetizers, and Hawaiian entertainment. Drink in memorable sunsets under our 130+ year old Kiawe Tree with views of the Pacific Ocean and Diamond Head. This setting is the perfect backdrop to preserve the honored tradition of cocktails and Hawaiian music under the stars and by the sea. Democrats currently hold a two-seat majority in the state House, and Republicans hold a five-seat majority in the state Senate.

Some of the houses are famous because of the architecture while others are famous for being used in movies and tv shows. There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by. Whether you’re looking for the perfect venue for a wedding, an eye-popping tour, or you just want to look around, the Greystone Mansion and park is a great place to start this list. It’s one of the most iconic houses in all of Los Angeles, and it’s open to tours and private events. More than 20,000 people were still without electricity hours after tornadoes began late Saturday night.

Will Rogers State Park is a massive outdoor escape from the city with tons of hiking trails with canyon and ocean views. You can tour the home and the rest of the estate but be ready to pay for parking. However, if you decide to go on one of the guided tours of the home, parking is completely free. The building was designed by architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

If you want an in-person tour you’ll have to book in advance, and the city does require proof of vaccination to tour it. Perry was a former chair of the Freedom Caucus, one of the most conservative factions of the Republican Party, with members including Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Perry was also a key figure in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. People gathered Saturday morning in the streets in the Elkhorn area of Omaha amid the scattered remains of the homes. The former SNP leader, who resigned from that post in 2004 following poor European Parliament election results, is clearly tempted to once again step into the spotlight following his year on the backbenches.

Photos on social media showed heavily damaged homes and shredded trees. Video showed homes with roofs stripped of shingles, in a rural area near Omaha. For decades, few people had access to Donald J. Trump like Rhona Graff. Now, Ms. Graff, his former personal assistant at the Trump Organization, became the second person to testify against Mr. Trump in his criminal trial in Lower Manhattan. David Pecker, former publisher of the National Enquirer, took the stand Monday afternoon to talk about his relationship with the former president and the tactics he used to keep negative stories about Trump from surfacing.

The destruction was extensive in Sulphur, a town of about 5,000 people, where a tornado crumpled many downtown buildings, tossed cars and buses and sheared the roofs off houses across a 15-block radius. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio.

Resulting emergency funding for State wildlife agencies to perform surveillance was a good start. The permanent authorization of such funds, as recommended by scientists and national security experts, is the next step. Congressional oversight of federal agencies is an essential part of the legislative process. Since the late 1700s, congressional oversight and investigations have improved federal government accountability and have led to major policy improvements. The Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries is working hard to advance federal water policy that promotes future drought resiliency through forward-thinking, collaborative policy solutions.

Species around the world are threatened by human-related activities, from climate change and habitat destruction to wildlife trafficking. We are currently facing the 6th mass extinction in history, with species disappearing approximately 100 times faster than the normal rate. However, House Republicans have launched a coordinated attack to tip the scales of justice in favor of corporate interests that do not want to be held accountable for the environmental damage they cause.

The building contains many functions to ensure maximum energy efficiency including chilled beam radiant systems throughout, LED lighting, high-reflectance non-roof and roof surfaces to mitigate solar heat gain and regional average warming trends. Exterior pavers highlight some of California’s threatened species and serve as a reminder to the importance of our work. Committee chairs have significant power to determine which bills live or die at the Capitol. New influential committee leaders announced Tuesday include Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), who will chair the powerful appropriations committee, and Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino), who will oversee the budget committee.

Climate change is also warming  the world’s oceans, which have already absorbed over 90% of the heat trapped by the greenhouse gases humans emit into the atmosphere. Warmer ocean temperatures cause sea level rise, increase the frequency and severity of storms, and harm marine ecosystems, threatening coastal communities across the U.S. and its territories. The Hearing Report presents findings and redacted documents from the Committee’s investigation into PR firms’ work on behalf of fossil fuel companies to mislead the public and block climate change policy proposals. A corresponding hearing featured a whistleblower that detailed her experience in dealing with a PR Firm hired to harass, intimidate, and prevent her from collecting ballot signatures.

The Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for overseeing the agencies that manage much of America’s water resources, as well as hydropower development and federal transmission lines. Democrats on the Subcommittee are committed to managing, developing, and improving America’s water supply in an environmentally and economically sound manner. Democrats are also dedicated to developing our domestic energy resources by promoting affordable, environmentally-sustainable hydroelectricity.

These coastal ecosystems absorb carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and safely store it at a rate of up to four times that of forests on land. They also reinforce coastlines, limiting the impacts of erosion, flooding and storms all while providing habitat for wildlife and fisheries. Other natural solutions include supporting living shorelines, a shoreline stabilization technique which provides wildlife habitat and natural resilience to communities threatened by rising sea levels, intensified storms, and coastal erosion. The federal government has a trust responsibility to protect tribes’ rights to access and use the water resources they are legally entitled to.

We recommended participants briefly peruse the existing priority nature-based climate solutions and the cross-cutting priorities prior to joining, which can be found here. The Subcommittee is also charged with developing and overseeing the implementation of laws managing domestic and international fisheries and other ocean and Great Lakes resources. The United States has made great strides in making fisheries more economically and environmentally sustainable, as well as in protecting vulnerable ocean ecosystems and species like sharks, whales, and coral.

A number of our bedrock environmental laws contain citizen suit provisions, including the Clean Air Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and Endangered Species Act. Citizen suits have leveled the legal playing field for all Americans and have led to significant improvements in public health, environmental quality, and natural resource management. Compounding these difficulties, Southern Utah has become the epicenter of the larger national debate between conservation and preservation. From unpopular expansions of national monuments to proposed natural asset companies seeking to lock up access to public lands, radical environmental policies threaten the freedoms and traditional outdoor lifestyles that Utahns have long cherished.

Not every recipient of a new leadership role supported Rivas, signaling that he and state lawmakers are willing to forgive and forget after this year’s political drama. The ocean regulates global temperature, generates oxygen, provides essential food supplies and is the planet’s largest carbon sink. But  climate change from the burning of fossil fuels poses significant risks to the health of our oceans. The Committee hosted a hearing in 2019 on chronic wasting disease, a roundtable in 2020 on the impacts of wildlife-borne diseases on human health, and a hearing in 2022 on the importance of monitoring wildlife diseases and preventing public health crises.

Indian water rights settlements have been the preferred alternative to litigation for tribes, states, and the federal government, including every Republican and Democratic administration, for decades. Negotiated settlements relieve taxpayers from significant legal liability; support cooperative solutions that benefit all stakeholders; and prevent costly, protracted, and divisive water rights litigation across the western states. Settlements also help tribal communities move past the health and economic consequences caused by a lack of secure access to water.

Biden Deals Devastating Blows to Alaskan Communities, Tribes and Energy Security...

Climate change-induced drought imperils our nation’s ecosystems and threatens to dramatically reduce drinking, industrial, and agricultural water supplies. The resulting impacts to water reliability disproportionately affect rural and tribal communities. In recent years, Republicans have worked to undermine our nation’s bedrock species protection laws, decrease funding for conservation initiatives and even permit drilling in precious places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Democrats are working to strengthen laws like the ESA and MBTA, increase funding for conservation efforts, expand the National Wildlife Refuge System, and secure funding for the recovery of imperiled species[MB1] . Committee Democrats are working to protect and promote healthy river ecosystems that support western state economies.

Assemblymember Chris Ward (D-San Diego) also supported Rendon over Rivas and was named leader of the housing committee on Tuesday, now overseeing policy decisions on one of the state’s top issues. Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, a Democrat and longtime Rendon ally who is running for mayor of Sacramento, was named chair of the high-profile public safety committee as California grapples with its crime response and leads the nation on issues including gun regulation. Tensions over how to respond to fentanyl and child sex trafficking split Democrats at the Capitol earlier this year.

Democratic Members will continue protecting marine ecosystems and increasing sustainability and transparency of our fisheries. Federal licenses for the construction and operation of nonfederal hydropower projects are typically issued for 50 years, meaning many dams across the country are currently operating on licenses granted prior to the passage of modern environmental laws. Dams undergoing the relicensing process are eligible for year-to-year license extensions, which allow aging dams to continue operating without the facility upgrades necessary to comply with current law. This issue will likely gain urgency in the years to come as nearly a fifth of all federal hydropower licenses are set to expire by December 2026. Committee Democrats are working to ensure robust environmental and tribal protections for existing and future hydropower projects.

Committee Democrats are fighting for reliable and sufficient funding to support existing and future congressionally approved tribal water settlements. Under Chair Grijalva’s leadership last Congress, Committee Democrats helped enact new tribal water settlements and deliver significant investments for tribal water projects, including  $2.5 Billion for tribal water rights ssettlements  in the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act. The U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources considers legislation and conducts congressional oversight on all issues within the Committee’s jurisdiction (see below).

These houses are concentrated outskirts of the major towns like Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham and London city. Edwardian houses also found in the coastal region of Bournemouth, Eastbourne, Brighton, and Hove. One of the most classic features of Edwardian houses was that they were built with high ceilings. This mold structure, made out of plaster, was placed around a light fixture. Gas heating and lighting became available from the high class to the middle class.

$2.9 Million Homes in California

Towards the end of the Edwardian period, extended chimney stacks also became popular. Edwardian houses are popular in several places throughout the world. There are many in the UK as well as in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Edwardian architecture

There are amalgamations between the two periods – most famously the ‘Painted Ladies’ in Alamo Square (above) which date from the mid-1890s but incorporate Edwardian features. With greater technological advances in lighting, came fashionable accessories – the most famous being the Tiffany lamps from America with their coloured stained glass, inspired by the likes of the Art Nouveau movement. Vernacular ideas ran deep through the designs, but now the integration of technology to make homes and daily life more manageable was key. Edwardian architecture is generally less ornate than high or late Victorian architecture,[2] apart from a subset – used for major buildings – known as Edwardian Baroque architecture. Edwardian and Victorian homes certainly have some similar characteristics, given that the Edwardian period followed the Victorian era.

Warmth is of significant importance in cold countries, and to accommodate this, Persian rugs became the aesthetic of the living room and entrance hall. The change from Victorian period houses to Edwardian period properties significantly influenced architecture. During the reign of King George IV, there was an advent of Georgian architecture too, which was based on the classical architecture of Greece and Rome. These grand, spacious houses, which are a sight to seize, are the Edwardian houses. These houses were constructed during the Georgian era and reflect the distinct construction style of Georgian properties.

Etiquette wasn’t just reserved for the relationship between servant and master. A unique set of rules also governed a hierarchy within the servant class itself. The butler and housekeeper were at the head of this group in terms of dignity, authority and earnings. Then came the cook, valets, ladies’ maids, and footmen; last of all were the parlor maids, laundry maids, kitchen maids, dishwashers, and stable grooms.

The Edwardian buildings were heavily inspired by the arts and crafts movement, while the Victorian properties were inspired by the show of a person’s wealth and status. Instead of the dark and cold colors of the Victorian period properties, warm and pastel colors like lilac, dusky blue, and green, primrose, and gray became the new choices.

Edwardian houses are reputed for being designed and built using high-quality materials, reducing the need for future maintenance costs that often accompany period properties. Edwardian houses were built in San Francisco at the beginning of the 20th century, immediately after the Victorian era. This was at a time when wealthy residents were tiring of the heavy, ostentatious style of Victorian architecture and moving towards a more pared-down look. Some Edwardian Baroque buildings include details from other sources, such as the Dutch gables of Norman Shaw's Piccadilly Hotel in London. Edwardian houses are popular due to their spaciousness, ornate detailing, nature materials, and timelessness, explains Artem Kropovinsky, an interior designer and founder of Arsight. Though the Edwardian era was over 100 years ago, Edwardian style houses continue to be popular today.

Particularly around London and the home counties, there was a huge demand for large homes and country houses that were close to railway stations for an easy commute to the city. The fireplaces during the Edwardian era were mainly simple in design and construction, but they still had their own styling features. They usually had shelves around the mantelpiece, and some even had inbuilt mirrors. The various arts and crafts movements from all across the world shaped the design and decor of the houses of this era. This blueprint of design, decor and structure paved the way for future generations. These houses were constructed during the reign of King Edward VII, the successor of Queen Victoria.

I'll just be sure to ask for my hash browns extra well-done next time. Yes, the All-Star Special with a side of hash browns was a lot of food for one person. I'm talking about a massive plate of fried potato shreds that crunches under the weight of my fork and falls apart before it gets to my mouth.

It was relatively thick — though not as thick as steakhouse bacon, of course — extremely meaty, and cooked to what I would personally call perfection. While there were crispy and crunchy bits aplenty, there were also long stretches of softer bites that allowed me to fully appreciate the beauty of the meat. My expectation for this part of the meal was that I'd receive two thin, limp, very greasy, mostly fatty strips of the meat, because that's what I'm used to at non-specialty diners. I was completely surprised in the best way when it actually came to the table. At first, I used my fork to swirl the melting pat of butter into my grits. After taking a bite I definitely enjoyed them but noticed they were a bit bland.

Anyone with severe food allergies might want to avoid Waffle House, as the restaurant can't guarantee that its cooking environment is free from any specific allergen. People with strict food allergies should be aware of any cross-contamination. To stay low in calories when ordering waffles, avoid the syrup and toppings, and stick to a small pat of butter or jam. No 24-hour diner chain inspires quite the same cult following as Waffle House.

Having tasted it myself, I now know why there is so much hype around this place. I loved being able to see the chef making each item to order, and I trust the chain to deliver when it comes to taste. The spread made me feel like I was back at one of my favorite old-school diners and the food was worlds better than I expected it to be. I knew that it had to be tasty to have the kind of following it does, but I didn't expect the Waffle House chain to impress me on as many levels as it did. That's why I was sure to order a $3 side of the starch at this breakfast chain. The final sign that this was a good waffle, in my opinion, was the fact that it was still just as tasty at the end of my meal as it was when it first arrived in front of me.

This hamburger competes with the nutritional value of other fast-food burgers, but you do get a nice sit-down environment at Waffle House. Peanut butter chips contain the most carbs and sugar of any of the waffle toppings. If you need something crunchy on your waffle, ordering the pecan topping can perhaps fulfill that craving.

The ubiquitous Waffle House—home of Sunday brunches, late-night eats, and family gatherings around stacks of breakfast foods—is a popular American restaurant. Because Waffle House is named after its most popular food, you will not be surprised that the majority of menu items contain a high number of carbs, calories, and sugar. Anyone watching their carb intake, staying away from gluten, or avoiding added sugar will struggle to find menu items to eat.
